What Dumpster Size Do I Need?

When it comes to renting a dumpster, selecting the right size is critical. You want to choose one that is large enough that it won’t be overflowing, but not so large that it is just taking up extra space. Depending on what kind of project you’re using it for, your needs may vary. We broke down the 4 different sizes that we offer to give you measurements, and ideas of some projects that may be suitable for each size.

10 yard

14′ long x 8′ wide x 4 1/2′ tall. Holds approximately 4 pick-up truck loads.

The 10 yard dumpster, the smallest size we offer, is typically recommended for residential use. This is a good size if you’re doing a small kitchen or bathroom remodel, or cleaning out a small garage and basement. Additionally, if you’re moving and throwing out furniture, bikes, exercise equipment, etc., this size will be sufficient. You can also use it for outdoor projects use such as dirt removal, yard debris, driveway tear-outs, and more. Deck removals of about 250-300 sq ft, or roof shingle removal of about 1500 sq ft will require a 10 yard dumpster.

15 yard

14′ long x 8′ wide x 5 1/2′ tall. Holds approximately 6 pick-up truck loads.

The 15 yard dumpster is another popular choice among homeowners, as well as businesses and contractors. This size is suitable for medium size garage clean-outs, typically a 3-car garage. It could also be used for a medium basement or kitchen remodel, and large yard clean-ups. Deck removals of approximately 375 sq ft, or roof shingle removal of 2250 sq feet will most comfortably fit in a 15 yard dumpster.

20 yard

22′ long x 8′ wide x 4 1/2′ tall. Holds approximately 8 pick-up truck loads.

Perhaps the most popular size, the 20 yard dumpster is still small enough to fit in your driveway for residential use, yet large enough to tackle bigger construction jobs. You may use this dumpster when building a home, for demolition jobs, or large landscaping projects. Homeowners like this size for large garage, attic, and basement clean-outs. You can fit years worth of unwanted junk in this container. This size is also good for floor and carpet removal, or large bathroom and kitchen remodels. Deck removals of about 300-400 sq ft, or 2500-3000 sq ft of shingle removal will require this size. So whether you’re looking for residential or commercial use, the 20 yard container may be a good size for you.

30 yard

22′ long x 8′ wide x 5 1/2′ tall. Holds approximately 10 pick-up truck loads.

The largest size we offer, the 30 yard dumpster, is a great choice for massive projects. Used in both residential and commercial settings, this dumpster may be used for major home additions, landscaping large areas, commercial roof tear-offs, and more. You may also want this size if you’re replacing the windows or siding of a small to medium sized home. This size will give you plenty of space to work with, without worrying about overflowing.
