Sorting Out Recyclables Before Your Dumpster Rental

Now more than ever, sustainability is important to protecting the environment. One way to do that is to make sure you aren’t trashing materials that could be reused or recycled to better serve the environment. By recycling the appropriate materials before you put them in the dumpster, you help keep landfills from filling up, and you reduce the need for new materials to be harvested or created.

So you’ve just rented a dumpster for waste removal, great! You’ve already made a choice that will save you both time and energy. But before you start to fill it up, consider the possibility of sorting your debris into recyclable and non recyclable materials. While it might take a little more time, it really is worth the effort and much better for the environment. Let’s go over the materials you need to watch out for, that are worth sorting out and disposing of in a more sustainable way.

Recycling Plastics

Most people know that plastics are recyclable, but they aren’t sure which types are actually able to be reprocessed and recycled by a facility. The first rule of thumb is to look for a recycling symbol with a number on it. This is most common on kitchen items but can often be found on containers of all types as well. If you see a number 1-7, hold onto it and keep it out of the dumpster, because those can be reprocessed into something else by your local facility.

Recycling Wood

Most people don’t realize that wood can actually be recycled. Not only is wood completely biodegradable, but it can also be turned into plenty of other useful things, depending on the size of the source material of course. Contact your local public works department (311) to find out the best way to recycle your wood.

Recycling Clothing

Clothing, both in good condition and poor condition can be diverted from the land fill. The best way to do this is to get all your unwanted clothing together and donate it to Goodwill, or another clothing donation agency or bin. Even torn clothes

Recycling Metal

Metal is one of the most recyclable materials out there. All types of metal can always be melted down and turned into something else with relative ease compared to plastic. If you do have extra scrap metal hanging around, or parts of furniture or a car that you were planning on throwing away, think again. Ordinary recycling bins aren’t usually meant for this type of raw material, but you can still drop it off at your local recycling center.
