How to Throw Away an Old Mattress

3 Ways to Dispose of Old Mattresses

Mattresses are one of the things you use every, so they’re bound to take up a lot of wear and tear. Even if you regularly flip your mattress so it wears evenly, it won’t last forever. After some years, most mattresses start showing their age and lose their comfort. In fact, they could also be unsanitary when used for a long period. However, when it’s time to bring home a mattress, you might wonder what to do with the old one. In this blog, we will discuss three ways to dispose of your old mattress.

Donate Old Mattresses to Charity

If your mattress is still in good shape, you can donate it to a local charity or an organization.  Some well-known organizations such as Salvation Army, Goodwill, and Habitat for Humanity accept mattress donations. Donating your mattress is a great way to help others and keep it out of landfills.

Now, in order to donate it, here’s what you’ll need to do:

  • Call ahead to make sure the charity accepts mattress donations. Some charities only accept certain types of mattresses or have specific donation requirements. If this is the case, you’ll need to see if your mattress meets these requirements
  • Make sure your mattress is clean before donating it. Take off all the bedding and give it a good vacuum.
  • Take the mattress to the charity. If they don’t offer a pickup service, you’ll need to arrange transportation yourself.

Old Mattresses Can Be Recycled

Many communities and organizations have mattress recycling programs. These programs break down mattresses and recycle the different parts, like metal springs, foam, and fabric. Recycling your mattress is a great way to reduce waste and lead a more sustainable lifestyle.

To recycle your mattress:

  • Find a mattress recycling program in your local area. You can do this by searching online or getting in touch with your local waste management company.
  • Prepare your mattress for recycling. Some programs may ask you to remove the mattress cover or cut the mattress into smaller pieces.
  • Get the mattress to the recycling facility. If the program doesn’t provide pickup, you’ll need to arrange transportation yourself.

Throwing Away a Mattress in Bulk Trash or Dumpster

If you can’t donate or recycle your mattress, you can dispose of it through your regular trash collection. Check with your local waste management company for any special mattress disposal rules. Some cities have specific rules for getting rid of mattresses. For instance, some cities require mattresses to be wrapped in plastic before placing them on the curb.
