Massachusetts has specific waste disposal rules on top of standard safety restrictions, and tossing the wrong item in can mean a rejected load, extra fees, or a genuine safety hazard for whoever handles it after you. Here’s what to set aside before the container fills up.
Anything Flammable, Toxic, or Reactive
Paint thinner, solvents, pesticides, propane tanks, motor oil, and gasoline are off-limits, no matter how small the container. These materials pose a real risk during transport and disposal, and most towns run separate household hazardous waste collection days to handle them. A shed full of old chemicals is a job for your town’s hazardous waste program, not the dumpster in your driveway.
Batteries and Anything With a Charge
Car batteries and lithium-ion batteries need dedicated recycling rather than a spot in a roll-off. They can ignite under pressure or heat, a real concern once a container is loaded and hauled.
Appliances Still Holding Refrigerant
Refrigerators, freezers, and AC units are fine to toss, but only after the freon and other hazardous fluids are professionally removed. A licensed appliance technician can handle that step; skipping it is both against the rules and a genuine environmental hazard.
Tires, Mattresses, and Textiles
Massachusetts treats these differently than a lot of other states. Whole tires are banned from disposal facilities statewide, and mattresses, box springs, and textiles have been on the state’s waste ban list since November 2022, meaning they need a designated recycling stream rather than straight disposal. Asbestos and Similar Building Materials
Older South Shore homes, especially anything built before the 1980s, sometimes turn up asbestos in old tile, insulation, or siding during a renovation. This requires specialized handling under state regulation, not a standard dumpster. If you’re unsure whether something in an older home qualifies, have it tested before demolition starts.
Large Quantities of Electronics
A single old TV or computer is usually fine, but a full office cleanout with dozens of monitors or computers typically needs e-waste recycling instead, often with a per-item fee. Some towns restrict electronics from dumpsters entirely, so check before a big office or estate cleanout.
