Why Dumpster Rentals Are Great For Roofing Projects

Dumpster rental services make roofers lives a whole lot easier. Dumpster rentals let roofers be able to dispose of the old shingles and waste right easily, and the container is then taken away without them having to worry about it.

The type of shingles you are working with can determine the size of the dumpster that you need. There are two main types of shingles and their characteristics:

  • “3-Tab” Shingles: 3-tab shingles are very popular on houses and are the cheapest option when it comes to roofing. The lay flat on the roof and appear in a rectangle formation. These shingles are on the lighter side, so they can pretty much fit in any size dumpster you want to rent. It will be able to hold a lot of them.
  • Premium or “Architectural” Shingles: These shingles are trendy and look like rhomboids. These ones will a slightly heavier than the 3-tab shingles, so plan accordingly and opt for a dumpster that can hold a lot more weight.

Roofing Measurements

Roofers use a measurement of “squares” to figure out the size of shingles, but it’s not the same measurement as a square foot. A roofer’s version of a square is the equivalent to 100 square feet, so be aware when you are placing the order for the dumpster and buying the shingles. Make sure that when you are talking to your dumpster rental company, you explain to them the size based on roofer’s square feet so they can provide you with the correct size dumpster.

Calculating Dumpster Size Based on the Number of Shingles

Figuring out the right size dumpster to rent depends on both the shingles volume and weight. Some roofs have more than one layer of shingles, so you are going to have to keep that in mind when you are renting the dumpster. You may need more space than you originally thought.

It will benefit you to have some estimates of weight based on pounds per square when assessing the job. This is how they weigh:

  • 3-Tab. A roofer’s square weighs around 250 pounds, which is about 1.25 tons per 10 square measurements.
  • Architectural. Each roofer’s square weighs around 400 pounds, which is roughly 40% more than their 3-tab counterparts. That’s around 2 tons per 10 square measurements.
